SFU’s esports teams opened the 2026 season during the first week of February, and two teams in particular have their sights set on another championship.
The newly formed Marvel Rivals Team went undefeated last semester.
“Marvel Rivals is the type of game where synergy is crucial to perform well as a collective,” said junior Computer Science major and Marvel Rivals captain Benjamin Haslett, “and that is one of the strengths we have.”
The team was a dominant force in its division last fall, capturing a league title by sweeping through the playoffs.
“I speak for myself and my teammates when I say that we are excited to hopefully have another undefeated season,” said Haslett.
The Marvel Rivals team is currently undefeated as it enters week three of the 2026 campaign.
Another powerhouse squad with high hopes this semester is SFU’s Smash Red Team, which advanced to the quarterfinals in the ECAC and were division champions in the NACE League.
“We had a great fall season,” said graduate student and captain of the Smash Red Team, Carmen Lefoer. “I feel very confident going into the spring.”
SFU’s Smash Red squad is also currently undefeated.
“We have a strong, connected team,” said Lefoer.
In addition to competing on the Smash Red Team, Lefoer assumed the role of interim Esports Coordinator at SFU earlier this month. He takes over for Ethan Wingard, who recently stepped down from this role to pursue other career opportunities.
“I’m committed to building a competitive and supportive environment,” said Lefoer. My goal is to help the program grow in a way that benefits both the players and the community around it.”
Lefoer graduated from SFU with degrees in Marketing and Management. The native of Poland, Ohio, is currently working on his MBA.
SFU’s Smash White Team – as well as Jalen Harriet, Rhyse Hamp and Ben Dodson on the University’s Madden Team – are also undefeated entering week three competition.
