The men’s basketball team lost to Mercyhurst, 94-79, in Loretto on Feb. 14.
Before the game, the University retired Joe Anderson and Mike Iuzzolino’s jersey numbers 42 and 44. The pair teamed up to lead the Red Flash to the 1990-91 NEC title.
Skylar Wicks scored a career-high 33 points for the Red Flash (6-20, 4-9 NEC) against the Lakers. Wicks hit 11 of 15 shots from the field and four of five from three-point range. He also had five rebounds and five assists.
Zion Russell (11) and Ahmad Harrison (10) also scored in double figures for SFU. Saint Francis held a 22-17 lead halfway through the first half, but the Lakers went on a 11-0 run to take a lead that they would not relinquish the rest of the way.
Bernie Blunt led Mercyhurst with 31 points and eight rebounds. Qadir Martin added 23 points and three blocks. The Lakers shot 60 percent from the floor (35-for-58), while SFU finished at 52 percent (26-for-50).
Mercyhurst (13-14, 8-6 NEC) outscored the Red Flash in the paint, 48-38.
It marked the fifth time in the last six games that an SFU opponent has scored 80 or more points.
Saint Francis will host LIU on Feb. 19. The game tips at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on NEC FrontRow. The Flash will wear black uniforms for first time this season against the Sharks and fans are encouraged to wear black to the game.
In addition, the Criminal Justice Club will be collecting monetary donations and teddy bears for their annual Bears-for-Care Drive during the game. The teddy bears collected will be distributed to local law enforcement agencies to give to children who are involved in emergency situations.
The CJ Club will also conduct a Bears-for-Care Drive during the women’s basketball team’s home game against Stonehill on Feb. 26.
