National Coaches Day will be celebrated across the United States on Oct. 6.
The holiday was established in 1972 at the urging of President Richard Nixon. It is a day where athletes are encouraged to reflect on the role that their coaches play in helping them achieve their goals within the athletic arena.
“The coaches of America, in sports and in many other fields of endeavor, do not work for personal glory,” said Nixon at the time that he signed a proclamation establishing the holiday. “Their satisfaction usually comes through the achievements of others whom they have helped.
“It is appropriate that our nation join in according them the recognition and honor which they so richly deserve, for they represent the finest elements in the American character.”
Abigail Sheehan is a member of the SFU track and cross country teams. Her head coach is Doug Hoover.
“He gives us workouts, like volume/hill runs, and goes over the importance of nutrients, hydration, sleep and taking care of yourself, mentally and physically,” said the freshman from Ebensburg.
“He also encourages us on good days by complimenting us on something we did well. On bad days, he reminds us that everyone has bad days, but that the sun will rise tomorrow.”
Tyler Wilson is a member of the Red Flash Esports team. His team is coached by Ethan Wingard.
“He brings the team together through communication and teamwork,” said Wilson about his coach.
The coaches at Saint Franics take their responsibilities to help Red Flash student-athletes seriously.
“I’m grateful for the opportunity to lead young men and help them grow in all aspects of life,” said the SFU football team’s defensive coordinator, Jacob Craig.
“I feel a responsibility to help these players grow so that, down the road, they can look back and say that something we did as coaches helped them be successful long after their playing days are over,” said Craig.
Christian Santiago is a redshirt sophomore on the SFU football team. He plays along the defensive line.
“Coach Craig cares for his players,” said the Erie native. “He helps out everyone in all positions.”
