The Department of Exercise Physiology and the Department of Public Health/Health Science recently merged to form the Department of Health and Human Performance.
Exercise Physiology Associate Professor Kris Wisniewski will serve as chairperson of the new department, which is headquartered in Sullivan Hall.
“It’s a natural fit for what we’re trying to accomplish, and we’ve been discussing for several years how we could work together on different projects,” said Wisniewski.
According to Wisniewski, one of the primary reasons for merging the two departments together is for faculty to collaborate on a planned diabetes prevention program for the community, one that will be reimbursable by insurance.
Wisniewski is excited about the opportunity to work with his colleagues on this initiative, one that will help patients with high glucose levels get them under control.
“Research shows that if they lose weight, exercise more, and change their diets, they can significantly reduce the risk of developing diabetes.”
The chair of the newly formed department is also excited about the synergy created by the merger.
“It will be exciting to work together, expand the experiences for our students, and help the community.”
Faculty members in the Department of Health and Human Performance include Theresa Horner, Michelle Stehman, Tyke Steiner, Brianna Toth, Kris Wisniewski and Lisa Wisniewski.
