Saint Francis Head Football Coach Chris Villarrial — the winningest coach in program history — signed a contract extension on April 1.
His signing of an extension came several days after the University announced that all its athletics programs will be transitioning from Division I to Division III.
The Red Flash will compete for one more academic year as a member of the Division I Northeast Conference (2025-26) before transitioning into the Division III Presidents’ Athletic Conference (PAC) in 2026-27.
“I love it here,” said Villarrial. “I believe having a strong culture is important. And I want to continue to build that culture in the years to come.”
Villarrial will enter his 16th year as head coach of the program this fall. He led the team to two NEC titles in 2016 and 2022.
Last season, the team recorded a 23-17 win over Kent State. It marked Saint Francis’ first-ever victory over an FBS school.
“It shocked everyone of course (the announcement that SFU will move to Division III), but that is life,” said Villarrial, who played 11 seasons in the National Football League as an offensive lineman.
“Life will hit you with unexpected things all the time, but it’s how you respond.”
During Villarrial’s tenure as head coach at SFU, the program has produced 27 All-Americans and 104 All-NEC honorees.
“To secure his continued leadership for our program was a priority,” said SFU Director of Athletics Jim Brazill.
Villarrial said he sees his role with his players as more than just Xs and Os.
“My commitment remains to developing well-rounded student-athletes who achieve excellence both in the classroom and on the field.
“I’m confident in our direction.”
Saint Francis will open the 2025 season at Louisiana Monroe on Aug. 28.
