The University’s Literary Club has been awarded an American Association of University Women (AAUW) Pennsylvania Student Impact Mini-Grant to help fund its upcoming Women’s History Month Panel.
The panel discussion is scheduled for March 20 at 6:30 pm in the Resinski Black Box Theatre.
The club has invited seven of SFU’s female faculty members to speak about the influence that other women have had on their personal lives and careers.
The club has decided to use the grant money to purchase 25 copies of “Invisible Women,” by Caroline Criado-Perez, which will be distributed to audience members at the event.
“We will be able to hand out books to people,” said Alexis Stoppe, co-president of the club. “I think this will attract more people to the event.”
Professor of English Brennan Thomas said the grant validates what the Literary Club members are doing.
“Earning this grant shows that our club members, especially our leaders, are committed to the club’s mission to cultivate students’ understanding and appreciation of diverse voices from all walks of life,” said Thomas.
“Including those of female leaders and writers whose accomplishments have been overlooked until recently.”
To encourage audience members to become involved with an organization that helps women and girls, the club’s officers plan on promoting the AAUW by sharing flyers on how to get involved with the association.
“I think that AAUW is a great organization with a great message and amazing people that work for it. Being supported by this group is a great honor,” said Stoppe.
Thomas agrees.
“I think earning this grant dovetails with our club’s mission to celebrate writers, especially women and minority writers.”
