Photos taken by Brother Shamus McGrenra across many years and many continents is currently on display at the Fine Arts Center. The exhibit opened on Jan. 23 and will run through March 7.
In the exhibit, Brother Shamus highlights 32 photos from his trips across Central America, North America and Europe. The photos are drawn from his collection of more than 15,000 images.
“These photos were all taken on my iPhone over many years and trips,” said Brother Shamus. “They are a collection of nature and campus shots.”
Assistant Professor of Fine Arts Jess Campbell asked Brother Shamus if he would consider displaying some of his images at the Fine Arts Center.
“I’ve known about Brother Shamus’ trips and photos, and I thought it would be really nice to showcase someone on campus who has a passion for the arts,” said Campbell.
Brother Shamus said he finds meaning in the images he has made, especially the ones currently on display.
“I look for God’s beauty in a picture,” he said. “A picture that shows nature’s beauty, inspired by the Good Lord, and a story behind it.”
Campbell believes that displays such as this one are important to continue in the future.
“From a University standpoint, it is important to show that the arts can be a vocation,” she said. “It can be something that you’re passionate about.”
Brother Shamus said he will continue to keep his iPhone camera at the ready during future travels.
“I’ll keep taking photos until I drop,” he said. “I look forward to taking inspiration from the Lord and sharing that with other people.”
