Entering SFU’s opening NEC action at LIU this weekend, senior volleyball player Maggie Hogan ranks first on her team in points (163.5), kills (142) and total attacks (387).
She earned NEC Prime Performer honors earlier this week for the third time this season and recorded 35 kills in a three-match tournament at Purdue-Fort Wayne last weekend.
The native of nearby Northern Cambria has been a mainstay in the Red Flash line-up since arriving at SFU. She was NEC Rookie-of-the-Year in 2021 and a second-team All-NEC selection in 2022.
“I am not an accolades or stats type of person,” said Hogan, “but it is nice to know people are recognizing the hard work that I am putting in.”
The Engineering major helped lead her Northern Cambria High School team to back-to-back state titles in 2018 and 2019. She earned high school all-state honors three times.
“I have played with Maggie since before our time at Saint Francis, and she is one of the most dependable players I have ever played with,” said senior setter Emma Fenton.
Fenton said her longtime teammate brings a confidence and calmness to the court that SFU relies on in key moments.
She also noted that Hogan is one of the hardest working people she knows.
Last season, Hogan recorded eight aces in a match against Sacred Heart, tying a school record. She was the only player in all of Division I to record eight aces in a match in 2023.
Hogan appreciates the opportunity to play the sport she loves near her hometown.
“Being close to home is one of the biggest positives to Saint Francis,” she said. “Not only do I get to play volleyball at a high level and be close to family, but I also get to be a role model for younger kids in my area.”
This weekend’s action at LIU features the two teams picked to finish atop the NEC standings by the league’s coaches. SFU was picked first in preseason voting and the Sharks were tabbed second in the eight-team league.
SFU and LIU will play two matches this weekend: one on Friday at 6 p.m. and the other on Saturday at 1 p.m. Both will be streamed on NECFrontRow.
