The field hockey team had a rough trip to New York City last weekend, dropping two hard-fought NEC matches at LIU (2-0) and Wagner (5-4 in OT).
“We played well together, but unfortunately didn’t get the outcome we wanted,” said senior Brooke Benson.
“We had some missed opportunities. We played well as a team, but they took advantage of our mistakes.”
Sophomore Consu de Castro and junior Madison Waldspurger each scored two goals in the overtime loss to the Seahawks.
De Castro leads SFU in points (22), goals (10) and shots on goal (28) through 15 matches.
Freshman Cruz Cánepa served up three assists in the setback.
The three assists are the second-most in a match in school history, tying Cánepa with two other SFU players.
Senior Dolores Zavaleta also had an assist in the Wagner match.
“It’s not easy coming back from behind, but we did it multiple times on Sunday,” said redshirt senior Riley Kromer.
“This will help motivate us to be more successful in our games this weekend.”
The Red Flash (8-7, 3-3 NEC) have three regular-season matches remaining, including two this weekend in Loretto.
Head coach Mackenzie Allessie’s team hosts Fairfield on Friday at 3 p.m. On Sunday, SFU welcomes Bellarmine to Loretto for a match that begins at noon on DeGol Field.
“We didn’t get the result that we wanted last weekend, but I think that we can learn from these games and use that knowledge to grow for our game against Fairfield on Friday,” said senior Ami Mattingly.
