The women’s golf team wrapped up its season, April 19-21, at the Northeast Conference Championship. The team finished ninth out of 12 teams at the Calloway Gardens Resort and Gardens in Pine Mountain, Georgia.
Meghan Zambruno had the Red Flash’s highest finish, placing 30th. McKenzie Gustas finished 43rd with a three-round total of 252.
Zambruno finished her second NEC championship with a three-round score of 242. The sophomore had five pars in the final round and ended the tournament with two birdies and 24 pars over 54 holes.
“I look forward to lots of intentional practice this summer and getting better every day to ensure a great fall season,” said the sophomore from Mount Pleasant, Pennsylvania.
Gustas said she was well-prepared for the championship.
“I was practicing close shots throughout the week from 100 or so yards because I knew I would have those situations come up in the tournament and they did,” said the sophomore from Hermitage, Pennsylvania.
Zambruno said repetition is the key to success in her sport.
“Lots of practice. Even outside of scheduled practice, I get in reps and drills.
“I consistently do the same putting and chipping drills.”
Camille Gagnon and Rachel Detore tied for the best score in the final round of the NEC finals, with both players carding an 83. Gagnon ended her first championship in 36th place with a score of 246.
The freshman from Quebec also had the best score for Saint Francis in the first round of the finals with a 75. Her first-day score card included a birdie and seven pars.
Detore wrapped up her third and final NEC Championship in 41st place with a three-round score of 250. The senior was one of two players to have two birdies in the final round.
Zambruno said the team looks forward to the fall season.
“We are a very close team – that always makes traveling and competing more fun.”
