The University’s 13th annual Student Research Day was held in JFK Lounge on Nov. 9.
Students showcased research projects that were completed during the current semester.
“Student Research Day is an excellent opportunity for students to present their research, to show others what they have been doing, and to practice how to present their research,” said Professor of Chemistry Balazs Hargittai, who organizes the event each year.
“Students practice how they talk about their research to people who are not in the same discipline and might not understand the concepts as much as they do.”
Thirty-four different research posters were presented by 71 students at last week’s event.
“Researching is a process,” said Madelyn Marzina, a Physician Assistant Science major. “In the future, especially when sending out a survey, I hope to get more responses back.”
Marzina’s honors thesis examined the emotional toll of injuries on NCAA Division I female student-athletes during the recovery process.
Students researched various topics ranging from “The Extraction and Purification of Caffeine from Sheetz Coffee” to “Hermit Crabs and Social Behaviors.”
A variety of majors were represented at the event, including Chemistry, Occupational Therapy, Physician Assistant Science, English, Psychology, Biology, General Engineering, Biochemistry, Medical Laboratory Science, History, Environmental Engineering and Mathematics.
Fourteen high school students who participated in the University’s Pre-College Research Academy in the summer were co-authors on multiple posters.
