The field hockey team’s freshman goalkeeper Mia DiGenova is off to successful start to her collegiate career.
Selected Rookie and Defensive Player-of-the-Week in the Northeast Conference last week, DiGenova recorded 11 saves in 60 minutes of action in matches at Lehigh and Villanova, while allowing just one goal against the Mountain Hawks.
A native of King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, DiGenova made her first career collegiate start in the match at Lehigh.
“It felt really great to get my first start, especially being close to home because all of my family and friends were there to cheer the team on,” said DiGenova.
A three-year letterwinner at Bishop Shanahan High School, DiGenova made 394 saves in her high school career.
“Mia has stepped into a big role as a freshman,” said team captain Ella Maillie. “She is always full of energy and helps create a positive environment for the team.”
After a 2-1 loss at Drexel last weekend, DiGenova and her teammates are preparing to open Northeast Conference action at home on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
“I was excited when I got both Rookie-of-the-Week and Defensive Player-of-the-Week,” said DiGenova, who shares time at goalie with fifth-year SFU keeper Amber Bryan.
“These awards mean a lot to me because I have been working hard.”
DiGenova has been working closely with Bryan, who has served as both teacher and mentor for the first-year goalie. Bryan is also a graduate of Bishop Shanahan High School.
“Mia is doing great. It can be very challenging transitioning to college field hockey, but she has really taken it in stride,” said Bryan. “Her performance on the field and in practice has been strong.
“I can’t wait to see what she can achieve moving forward.”
