Students and faculty in the Fine Arts Program are in the initial stages of their preparations for the University’s fall play, “Ekphrasis.” It will be performed at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art.
The play was written by 2023 SFU graduate Scott Riner, who was very active with various theatrical programs during his four years at the University. He also served as editor of the Troubadour from 2021-23.
“Ekphrasis is a retelling of the myth of Hades and Persephone,” said Riner. “The play reimagines Hades as a struggling artist struck by inspiration when he catches a glimpse of Kora, whom he renames Persephone.”
This is not the first time Riner’s work has been performed at SFU.
“My career goal is to work as a playwright,” said Riner. “So any chance I get to share my stories with an audience, I will take. Especially with a troupe of actors as gifted as the ones at SFU.”
Assistant Professor of Theatre Lance Mekeel chose Riner’s play for the 2023 fall performance.
“I look forward to working with our actors and with our playwright (Riner), who will be actively involved,” said Mekeel.
Mekeel said he is excited that the play will be performed at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art.
“It will be interesting to see our fall performance in a non-traditional theatrical space,” he said.
Auditions for Ekphrasis will be conducted next week in JFK Auditorium.
