The month of May is National Military Appreciation Month.

Throughout the month, Americans are encouraged to show their appreciation to past and present service members in different ways.

During Military Appreciation Month, Americans are asked to reflect on the important role that the U.S. Armed Forces play in the history and development of our country.

May was designated as Military Appreciation Month in 1999 due to the military-related holidays that are celebrated throughout the month, including Loyalty Day, Military Spouse Appreciation Day, Armed Forces Day and Memorial Day.

“I want to serve my country because of the courage and honor our country instills into its citizens,” said Aidan Cirulli, a freshman member of the University’s ROTC Program.

Military Appreciation Month was created by a group of organizers who were concerned that holidays dealing with military milestones were becoming increasingly viewed by many as just another opportunity for a three-day weekend.

“I chose the military because it is the ultimate form of service to one’s nation,” said Brian Fenchak, a Lieutenant Colonel in the Army Reserve who served in Afghanistan. Fenchak has taught military history courses at the University.
