Student-Athletes Participate in “Read-Across-America Week”

Student-athletes volunteered their time to read books to area elementary school students in celebration of “Read-Across-America Week” earlier this month.

Read-Across-America Week, a national event intended to encourage reading, was created to engage, motivate and make children feel welcome in their learning environment. It was celebrated during the first week of March.

Red Flash student-athletes enjoyed their time with area students.

“It’s something that I’ve participated in since I was in high school, and it has always been a rewarding experience,” said women’s basketball plater Kayley Kovac, a sophomore from Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania.

“Being able to give back to the community and help make learning fun for kids who look up to you makes it all worth it.”

Kovac’s teammate Phee Allen agrees.

“It felt good to read to the kids and listen to their questions about college and life itself,” said Allen, a sophomore Communications major from Newport News, Virginia.

Other student-athletes who participated said that the experience is one to cherish and remember.
