Women’s Basketball defends Degol

After an unexpected loss to Robert Morris on Saturday, January 13, Saint Francis University Women’s Basketball couldn’t wait for the opportunity to get revenge on the team that knocked them out of first place in their conference.

In their previous meeting, junior guard Jessica Kovatch contributed 42 points to the team’s 62-point total.  However, with 33 turnovers and Colonials’ senior forward Megan Smith’s 3-point buzzer beater, it just wasn’t enough.

During their meeting on February 3, Red Flash was determined to defend Degol. When the final buzzer sounded and 68-47 showed on the scoreboard, Red Flash knew they put themselves back on top.

The win took preparation and a complete team effort. “As a team, we really wanted to win and knew that every possession counts,” Kovatch said. “In the second half we knew we just came out hot because we knew we were better than what we showed in the first half.”

Degol was packed with supporters, from students, fellow athletes, faculty and fans, there to witness Kovatch’s 32-point performance, which led to her becoming the nation’s leading scorer.

Red shirt freshman guard Caitlyn Kroll contributed 12 points, shooting for 44%. “It was a great feeling being able to move into 1st place at home in front of a wonderful crowd,” said Kroll. “We’ve worked really hard to beat Robert Morris. That game meant so much to us.”
