Upset of Penn State puts men’s volleyball on brink of first EIVA title

The Saint Francis University men’s volleyball team pulled off one of the great victories in Red Flash sports history with a playoff upset of Penn State University in four sets Thursday.

Penn State had won 17 consecutive Eastern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association (EIVA) titles before the Flash stunned them on their own court, 27-29, 28-26, 25-22, 25-20.

Saint Francis had been 0-36 all-time against Penn State before beating the Nittany Lions in a regular-season matchup March 16. That win foreshadowed the playoff victory, as the Flash rallied at PSU’s Rec Hall after dropping the first set.

The Flash will face George Mason University in the EIVA finals at 7 p.m. Saturday at Rec Hall on the Penn State campus.
