Seventeen students participated in the Shields School of Business’ 16th annual London trip over Spring Break. The trip was chaperoned by SSOB Dean Randy Frye, Accounting Professor of Emeritus Jim Logue and SSOB Administrative Assistant Lianna Weir.
The trip is part of the School’s MGMT 307 course which is titled “The Role of Great Britain in the Global Economy.”
Frye noted that it was a great group of students, that they were “ambitious” throughout the week, and that they were engaged in the group’s various collective and individual activities.
Some of these activities included a walking tour of the financial district of London, visits to the Bank of England Museum and Lloyds of London, trips to Burrough Market and Windsor Castle, a Jack the Ripper Walking Tour, a visit to the Tower of London, and two professional league soccer matches.
Students enjoyed these scheduled activities, as well as other excursions outside of group events.
“I went to Paris with our (SSOB) grad assistant Sienna,” said sophomore Marketing major Patty Cabrera. “I did lots and lots of shopping and saw Buckingham Palace.”
Students noticed many differences between the United States and the United Kingdom.
“No one in London was seen with a water bottle,” said Cabrera. “It is more common to see people with coffee than water.”
“It was fascinating to see how different London is from, say, New York,” said junior Eaghan Kieff. “The biggest differences I noticed were the markets, the road layout and design of the city.”
One of the activities that the group found especially interesting was the trip to Lloyd’s of London, the world’s leading insurance market.
“The atmosphere of Lloyds was so powerful,” said Kieff. “I couldn’t believe I was standing in a place where millions of dollars worth of deals take place.”
Kieff said that the group bonded during their time in Europe.
“Even though it was a study-abroad trip, it felt like I was on vacation with friends,” he said.
Since its inception, the SSOB’s London excursion has provided approximately 325 students with the opportunity to learn more about global business through this immersion experience.
