The University’s Spring Break in on the horizon and while students and faculty will get a break from classes, exams and assignments from March 2-10, many will stay busy on trips to different spots around the globe during the first week of March.
A group of students in the Physician Assistant Science Program will travel to Guatemala. Saint Francis PA students and faculty have consistently given of their time and talents over recent spring breaks.
“Students who go on this trip will offer healthcare services that are not regularly accessible in remote villages,” said Leona Horner, SFU’s Director of International Education.
Three SFU students who launched a company called EcoPrint will also be making this trip with the PA students.
EcoPrint is a non-profit organization founded by junior Biology-Pre-Med majors Caleb DeBass, Nate Poplos and Carson Elbin. The company’s mission is to reduce plastic waste by transforming discarded plastic water bottles into 3D-printed products that help underserved communities.
EcoPrint recently produced thousands of toys and medical containers out of recycled bottles that they will distribute to people during the trip to Guatemala.
While PA students will be serving people in Central America, Occupational Therapy and Education students will head to the Caribbean.
“OT students will volunteer their services with the Bahamas Association for the Physically Disabled,” said Horner. “They cater to children with various spinal cord injuries.”
Across the street from where the OT students will be working, Education majors will volunteer at the Stapledon School. They will work with children who have intellectual disabilities.
This group will also volunteer their services at the Bahamas Emergency Youth Hostel.
A group of students in the Shields School of Business will visit London from Feb. 29 to March 9.
This is an educational trip. Students will tour many of the city’s landmarks, including Windsor Castle and the Tower of London. They will also spend time visiting and learning about international business in London’s financial district.
