The “Cardiac Crew” SFU field hockey team posted a thrilling, come-from-behind overtime win last Friday over NEC rival LIU at DeGol Field. Trailing 1-0 with just over a minute left on the clock, junior Eva Valentini took over the match.
With the clock winding down, the Red Flash earned a penalty corner and Olivia Muffitt found the stick of Julia Breneman. The senior then set up Valentini for the game-tying goal with 83 seconds remaining.
“I was so excited when I scored,” said Valentini. “I saw the opening and I put everything behind the shot.”
With just under three minutes left in the first overtime period, another penalty corner was awarded to the Flash. This time, Marie Sattler found Valentini and the Argentina native sent another ball into the back of the cage, sealing the come-from-behind win.
“I just remember screaming and cheering so loud for Eva after she scored,” said senior Hannah Rohrer.
For Valentini, it marked the fourth two-goal game of her career. She leads the Flash in goals (7) and points (16) through 14 matches.
Sattler’s pass on Valentini’s game-winning goal brought her to the top of the league in assists with 7. Goalie Amber Bryan has stood solid in net for SFU, with 17 saves in the last two games and 41 on the season.
SFU (8-6, 3-1) is currently in second place in the NEC. The team will play two matches this weekend at Merrimack (Oct. 20) and Stonehill (Oct. 22)
