SFU Fine Arts Adjunct Professor Bonnie Resinski has been nominated for the English-Speaking Union’s Lifetime Achievement Award. Resinski’s students at nearby Northern Cambria High School were regularly involved with ESU’s Shakespeare competition until her retirement.
In 2015, she became the coordinator of the competition.
“I became interested in working with ESU because if a student won a regional competition, they received an all-expense paid trip to New York City for a weekend,” said Resinski.
Competitors are expected to perform an approved 20-line Shakespearian monologue and sonnet.
“I had two students who got to go to New York City,” said Resinski. “It gave me another goal outside of the classroom.”
English Professor John Woznak assisted Resinski when ESU hosted the competition at Saint Francis.
“Just to see students fascinated by Shakespeare and making it their own was brilliant,” said Woznak. “Shakespeare lives again in a new generation.”
Resinski recently retired from her coordinator position at ESU, but her love for Shakespeare continues to flourish.
“When it comes to Shakespeare, the answer is always in the text,” she said.
