The Red Flash continue their quest for the first victory of the 2023 season when they travel to Newark to face Delaware this Saturday, Sept. 16, following a 31-21 loss at Robert Morris last weekend.
The game started off slowly on offense for both teams: the first four possessions resulted in only a field goal for Robert Morris. Saint Francis then mounted an eight-play, 50-yard scoring drive capped by a QuaSean Holmes two-yard touchdown run, the first run play of the drive.
Robert Morris responded with a 25-yard trick play for a touchdown, one where quarterback Anthony Chiccitt made a great catch for the score, only for Saint Francis to respond with a deep ball touchdown of their own when Cole Doyle – who was a millisecond away from being sacked – found receiver Casey McKinney on a beautiful throw for 53 of his team-high 111 receiving yards on the evening.
The teams then traded punts and the Colonials scored just before the half to make the score 17-14 at the intermission.
After a great first half, Doyle failed to find a similar rhythm in the second, throwing two interceptions. The offense wouldn’t score again until the 6:30 mark of the fourth quarter on Doyle’s first rushing touchdown of the season.
The Red Flash’s next test is at Delaware, where they will face a Blue Hens team that knocked them out of the FCS Playoffs last season.
Delaware is also looking to bounce back after a 63-7 loss at Penn State last weekend.
A match-up to watch for in this one is the Saint Francis rush defense vs. Delaware’s running game: the Blue Hens ran for 283 yards in their 56-17 playoff win over SFU last season.
The game kicks at 6 p.m. and can be viewed on FloSports.
