The women’s volleyball team took two out of three matches last weekend in the Red Flash Classic. Other schools that participated in the tournament included Stony Brook, Purdue-Fort Wayne and Manhattan.
The Red Flash opened the weekend by beating Manhattan, 3-0 and then fell in their second match to Purdue-Fort Wayne, 3-2. SFU defeated Stony Brook, 3-2, in its final match of the tournament.
SFU senior outside hitter Skye Eicher and junior outside hitter Maggie Hogan were named to the all-tournament team.
“Overall, we are playing at a high level,” said head coach Sara Spielvogel. “We have a lot of heart and grit, but we need to clean up some smaller things with our technique work.”
Spielvogel believes playing a challenging non-conference schedule will prepare her team for Northeast Conference action, which begins later this month.
“A lot of the teams we have been playing would be high-level NEC teams. The level of competition – and to battle with some of these teams – is going to prepare us for conference play.”
The Red Flash will travel to Spartansburg, South Carolina, this weekend to compete in the Wofford Invitational.
Christine Covello, a junior setter from Bryn Mawr, believes her team played well last weekend.
“Overall I think we did a great job,” said Covello, who finished the tournament with 32 assists.
“Our coach does a great job getting us prepared and putting us in the right spots. Communication is so important out there on the floor and that is what we will really be focusing on.”
