Musical Godspell to Debut in November
The Saint Francis Theater Department will perform Godspell as its Fall Musical this November.
The former Broadway hit illustrates the events of the Gospel according to Matthew, following Jesus’ ministry and his interactions with his disciples during his time on Earth.
Visiting Assistant Professor of Theater F.J. Hartland, who is directing the musical, sees the show as an apt choice for troubled times: “In today’s world that is filled with so much anger and hate, Godspell reminds us that life is supposed to be about love, tolerance and compassion.”
Godspell first appeared on Broadway in 1976 and underwent a revival in 2011.
“I think it’s going to be a very moving show,” said cast member Olivia Folmer, a freshman occupational therapy major. “No matter what your religious beliefs are, it’s definitely going to be worth coming to.”
Folmer plays the character known as ‘Robin,’ who is one of the first disciples to follow Jesus. Most of the 11 cast members will play their role using their own name. “Originally, the character names were the names of the actors who originated the roles,” said Hartland.
Godspell performances will be Nov. 10th, 11th and 12th at 7:30 p.m. in the JFK auditorium. Saturday, Nov. 12th also offers a matinee at 2 p.m.
Performances are free for students, faculty and staff.
