The nation celebrated President’s Day earlier this week and several SFU students weighed in on their favorite Commanders in Chief to mark the occasion.
“My favorite president is George Washington because he set the standard for the presidency,” said junior Gretchen Wilmer. “He established an important tradition of stepping down after two terms, which showed humility and respect for democracy.”
Sophomore Kyle Charles said that his favorite president is James Buchanan because he is a “hometown hero” from Pennsylvania.
Buchanan is the only president considered to be “from” Pennsylvania. However, former president Joe Biden was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, before moving to Delaware at a young age.
“I also really like Abraham Lincoln for all that he did to abolish slavery,” said Charles.
Charles wasn’t the only student at SFU who chose Lincoln as No. 1.
My favorite president is Abraham Lincloln because he helped lead the United States to a slavery-free country,” said freshman Gian Gomez. “I also like his look.”
“President Eisenhower was a really cool guy,” said junior Pete Monoski. “The fact that he served in the Army, planned out the D-Day landings in Normandy, and then became president really shows how well-versed his leadership was.”
“My favorite President was Barack Obama because he was very inspirational as the first African-American president,” said senior Kori McClure.
“My favorite president is Franklin Delano Roosevelt,” said senior Sam Lane. “His Alphabet Soup programs helped the country get out of the Great Depression.
“And to top it off, he showed great leadership during World War II.”
