Students’ Photography on Display for SFU Community

Three SFU students’ photography efforts were recognized on Feb. 18 as part of the “3 Women, 3 Visions” exhibition in the lower level of the library.

The three students who contributed to the art exhibit are Stephanie Connell, Sydney Shearer and Grace Smith. They each presented around 20 photographs.

The women’s work focused on three themes: nature, architecture and portraits. Their photographs are available for purchase.

“I felt like I was actually where the picture was taken,” said Christine Geiger, a sophomore aquarium and zoo science major who attended the opening of the exhibition. “I felt the action of the concert, I felt the life of the city, and the love of a mother and her child,” Geiger added.

The three students’ work will continue to be showcased in the library until April 15.

“Let yourself get caught up in the idea that there’s beauty all around you,” said Connell, a junior self-designed major. “And you’re getting the opportunity to capture that (beauty). That someone can look at it again and feel it every time they see it.”

The exhibition is the culmination of the students’ work in an independent-study photography course taught by Charles Olson.

Connell began pursuing her photography in the spring 2015 semester, while Smith and Shearer both started their projects in Italy during the summer of 2015.

“When you start, you’re going to be awful,” said Connell. “Don’t let that discourage you.

“Practice as much as you can with your camera,” Connell added. “It should become part of you. If you don’t get worried when someone else picks up your camera, then you don’t love your camera enough.”
