Jack Webber recorded a goal and an assist and Brendan McGhee and Francis de Vries added tallies as SFU picked up its first win of the year, 3-1, over Bucknell on Friday.

Webber knocked home a Pablo Medina corner kick in the 50th minute to give the Red Flash a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. The defender’s goal broke up what had been a defensive match between the two teams.

Marcus Rojas got his first start of the year in net, and made three first half saves and five in the match.  The teams were scoreless after the first 45 with the Bison owning a 7-5 shot edge.

Webber’s goal opened the game up as the Bison tried to press for the equalizer. Rojas turned away a Jesse Klug shot just moments after Webber’s goal.  The Flash would strike again on a counter-attack. After Zack Rockmore’s shot was blocked, Calvin Rezende found Mario Mastrangelo, who chipped a pass into McGhee. McGhee finished in the 66th minute with a shot that found the back of the net from 12 yards.

The Saint Francis defense locked down and preserved the lead. The Red Flash held the Bison without a shot off two set pieces. Rojas then turned away a Dany Teran shot, leading to another SFU counter-attack. Andres Vega put a corner kick into the box where Webber found deVries for his first goal of the season in the 83rd minute to make it 3-0.  Less than 30 seconds later, Klug beat a charging Rojas to set the 3-1 final.

With the win, the Red Flash improved to 1-1-2 on the season. Saint Francis will open its home season against Niagara on Sunday.
