The field hockey team partnered with the Cambria Care Center to make Valentine’s Day care packages for residents at the facility earlier this month. 

“Many of the players on our team have ties with someone in their lives who live in personal care or nursing homes,” said assistant field hockey coach Katie Hammaker. 

“This population is suffering immensely during this time of social and physical isolation- some people living in personal care facilities across the state have not been able to leave their rooms since the pandemic started. 

“Being able to spread smiles and joy during these difficult times has been one of the most rewarding things we have been able to do.”

The Red Flash field hockey team is historically one of the most active SFU athletics programs with regards to community outreach.

“With not having the ability to do service projects off campus because of Covid, we have had to be pretty creative with what we do for service this year,” said Hammaker.

“We would love to continue to partner with the Cambria Care Center.”

The field hockey team is also volunteering at SFU’s Covid-vaccine clinics on weekends. 

Members of the team have worked at clinic sign-in tables, collecting waivers, entering data, and making sure people are feeling well enough to leave the Stokes Center after receiving the vaccine. 

“We are ecstatic that we are able to play even a small role in such a historic moment,” said Hammaker.
