The campus was “wired” last weekend for Homecoming festivities.

The Homecoming parade started in front of the Stokes Center on Saturday morning. The parade, led by the SFU marching band and cheerleaders, included members of this year’s Homecoming court and floats created by various clubs and organizations on campus.

Members of the Homecoming court included Kelly Beegle, Chelsea Crandall, Tori Martin, Kaitlin Mihelcic, Hallie Rexer, Glenn Beckmeyer, Dave Budash, Ronnie Drinnon, Nick Rittle and Zach Woodley. Budash and Mihelcic were named the king and queen at halftime of Saturday’s football game against Sacred Heart.

“I am honored to have been voted Homecoming king,” said Budash. “I didn’t expect to win and when my name was announced, I didn’t know what to do at first. I was shocked.

“Then everyone started to congratulate me and I just tried to appreciate the moment.

“Katie and I have known each other since elementary school – for us to win king and queen together made the moment even more special.“

Mihelcic was also appreciative of the honor.

“I love this University dearly,” said Mihelcic. “I still cannot believe it, but I feel so incredibly blessed. This is a huge honor.

“Thank you to everyone who made this possible.”

The Red Flash football team defeated Sacred Heart, 23-14, in the Homecoming game to stay undefeated (4-0) at home this season.

At halftime of the game, the band performed a medley of movie themes while fire baton twirler Steph Tamasy impressed the crowd.

Cassidy Merrifield, a senior physician assistant major and member of the Gamma Sigma Sigma Sorority, was responsible for coordinating the winning “InstaGam” float.

“We had such a great time putting together the float,” said Merrifield. “The parade is always such a great way to start off Homecoming and I loved that they announced the winners at the game this year, instead of through email like last year.

“All the Gamma girls were at the game sitting together when they announced we won. It was so nice to see all our hard work pay off and to be together for it.”

Gamma Sigma Sigma’s winning float was themed around Instagram. The lights that wrapped around the trailer, the Instagram page frames and the enthusiasm of the girls on board made their float stand out.

Music from Todd Carey and a food truck supplying free food kicked off Homecoming festivities last Wednesday at JFK.

The popular Casino Night was conducted Thursday evening – $2,000 worth of prizes were given away at the event. Club 21 was also open that night for undergraduate students who are of legal drinking age.

On Friday, the DIY Room was open for students to get their “creative fix” during a Homecoming-themed craft night. This was followed by the “Dancing with the Stars” finale, where Kitana Downs and Duncan Lundberg captured top honors.

Retro arcade games also filled JFK Lounge Friday evening.

Saturday night’s Homecoming dance at the Stokes Center’s auxiliary gym concluded festivities.
